Summer Song Bird
Say hello to our August babe, singer and ultimate coffee queen Savannah Outen. Savannah got her start back in 2007 when she and other notable names like Justin Bieber and Esmee Denters started posting covers and original songs on YouTube before anyone else had caught on to the trend.
From there, Outen blew up on the music scene, landing her song "Goodbyes" on the top 30 countdown and becoming the first unsigned artist to have the highest rated song ever on Radio Disney.
Babes is honored to have chatted with the song bird about her fave LA coffee haunts, "making it" young, and her quest to reach new heights with her newest single, "Sad in the Summer." So what are you waiting for? Let's get too know Savannah better...
Who/what drove you to start posting videos on YouTube?
It was my parents' idea to post my first video on YouTube! The only others really posting singing videos were Justin Bieber and Esmee Denters. We had no idea people would actually watch my video and ask for more. The intention was to have people from the industry watch.
Were you surprised by the attention you received from these videos?
I was shocked! Within the first couple weeks, people were creating fan accounts for me. That was surreal because at the time I was running one with my best friend for JT lol
I remember you blowing up on the Disney scene back in 2007! What was that like for someone so young?
Those were some of the best times of my life. I was such a fan of all things Disney, so getting the support from them was a dream come true. I remember seeing my music video on the channel and having tears in my eyes because I had always dreamed of being on the network.
Shortly after your overnight success, you decided to step out of the spotlight. How did you come to terms with that decision?
I had people telling me who I was and I needed to take a break and answer that question for myself. I decided to take some time to develop and discover who I was as a person and an artist.
You talk about discovering the REAL you. Can you tell us a little bit about the authentic Savannah Outen?
I’m a simple girl who LOVES music. I love coffee, I love The Bachelor, I love online shopping. For a while I always thought I needed to have some crazy elaborate story in order to make it. I thought I needed to wear flashy things in order to attract fans. But now I’m embracing being ME. I don’t have a gimmick. I just write songs about love and save a lot of money on therapy lol.
We are LOVING “Sad in the Summer.” What was the inspiration behind the song?
Thank you!!!! I wrote Sad about an on and off relationship I was in that I knew wasn’t right for me. But of course, I kept going back to it because I’d remember the great times. I found a sense of freedom the day I wrote this with my best friend Colin Dieden and the super talented K-Kov.
With new original music coming out, can fans still expect covers from you?
I will still be releasing covers, but I’m excited to share more of these stories and put out all these new original songs.
What advice would you give young artists looking to make their mark? Do you think YouTube is still a viable way for them to do it?
I still think YouTube is great, but Instagram is always another awesome way to get your name out there. I love how social media is such an amazing platform for everyone. It’s important to stay persistent and NOT give up. I know that’s such simple advice, but if you put a lot of work, passion and time into what you love, only good things can come out of it.
What is your ultimate goal as an artist?
My ultimate goal is to connect with as many people. I want my music to be the soundtrack to girls (and boys!) lives. Of course I have dreams to perform and host SNL or walk into Target and see my CD on the shelves. But my biggest goal is to be able to represent “every” girl and show them that it’s ok to be yourself. Actually, it’s awesome.
What would you define as a “Babe with Coffee”?
A babe with coffee is someone who is a hard working, inspiring person who empowers others around them. They follow their own lane, take chances and have their cup of coffee in hand at all times to get the job done.
Anything else you want to add?
Shoutout to coffee and all the wonderful things it does for us all lol. Also, make sure to check out the Sad in The Summer music video ;)
